📖 About Bald Cypress

Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) is a beautiful deciduous conifer native to the southeastern United States, where it naturally grows near rivers, lakes, wetlands, and swamps.

Known for its soft, feathery foliage, strong trunk development, and unique seasonal changes, Bald Cypress is an excellent species for bonsai. Unlike many conifers, it naturally loses its foliage during fall and winter before producing fresh green growth again in spring.

🌤️ Lighting

Bald Cypress thrives outdoors in bright light and full sun.

Provide several hours of direct sunlight each day for strong, compact growth.

Young trees can tolerate partial sun, but more sunlight generally encourages better trunk and branch development.

Bald Cypress is an outdoor tree and should not be kept indoors long-term.

---

💧 Watering

Bald Cypress loves water and prefers consistently moist soil.

Water thoroughly and do not allow the soil to dry out completely during the growing season.

During hot weather, check the soil frequently, especially when the tree is growing in a small bonsai pot.

Bald Cypress can also tolerate sitting in a shallow tray of water during periods of active summer growth.

Reduce watering slightly during winter dormancy, but never allow the root system to become completely dry.

---

🪴 Soil

Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix that also retains some moisture.

Bald Cypress tolerates wetter soil conditions better than most bonsai species.

Good drainage and airflow around the roots are still important for healthy long-term development.

Always use a container with drainage holes.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

Bald Cypress is a deciduous outdoor tree and naturally experiences seasonal changes.

During fall, the foliage may turn bronze, copper, orange, or reddish-brown before dropping.

The tree may become completely bare during winter dormancy — this is normal.

Fresh new foliage will emerge again in spring.

Protect young bonsai trees from severe or prolonged freezes, especially when grown in small containers.

---

🌿 Fertilizing

Feed during spring and summer using a balanced bonsai fertilizer.

Fertilize regularly during active growth to encourage healthy foliage, trunk thickening, and branch development.

Reduce feeding as growth slows in fall.

Do not fertilize heavily while the tree is dormant in winter.

---

📦 Post-Shipping Care

After arrival, unpack your Bald Cypress promptly and check the soil moisture.

Place it outdoors in bright light or partial sun for the first few days.

Keep the soil consistently moist while the tree adjusts.

Avoid major pruning, wiring, or repotting immediately after arrival.

Once established, gradually move the tree into its normal full-sun location.

---

🍂 Dormancy

Bald Cypress naturally loses its foliage every year.

A tree with yellowing, brown, or falling foliage during fall is usually entering its normal dormant period.

A completely bare Bald Cypress in winter is not necessarily unhealthy or dead.

Do not expect evergreen foliage during the colder months.
