- PLANT CARE
A Fleshy, softly woody shrub or small tree up to 3m to 4m, often sprawling; occurring on dry rocky hillsides and in succulent scrub. Portulacaria Afra, also called “Elephant Plant” or “Small leaf Jade” is relatively new in bonsai but one that almost anyone can grow. It can withstand long periods without water making them excellent plants for beginners. Advanced students of bonsai find them excellent material because they adapt to any style and develop relatively fast. The bark is green when young, becoming red-brown to slate grey, and smooth with conspicuous leaf scars. Leaves are simple, opposite, almost circular.
You will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. Note that plant may not have flowers or fruit on them depending on the time of year. Tray and display not included.
☀️ Lighting ☀️
The Mini Jade (Portulacaria Afra) thrives in bright, indirect light. It loves full sun but can tolerate some light shade, especially during the hottest part of the day. For the best results, place your Mini Jade in a spot where it receives 4-6 hours of sunlight a day, such as a sunny windowsill. If it doesn't get enough light, the plant may become leggy and less vibrant. However, avoid placing it in harsh direct sunlight for extended periods, as this can cause sunburn on the leaves.
💧 Watering 💧
As a succulent, the Mini Jade is drought-tolerant and prefers infrequent watering. Water the plant only when the soil is completely dry to the touch, typically once every 1-2 weeks depending on the climate and indoor conditions. Be sure to thoroughly soak the soil, allowing any excess water to drain out. Overwatering is a common mistake with succulents and can lead to root rot, so always ensure the pot has proper drainage. During winter, reduce watering, as the plant enters a dormant phase and requires less moisture.
🌥️Weather☀️
The Mini Jade is best suited for warm, dry climates and should be protected from frost. It thrives in temperatures between 60°F and 85°F (15°C to 29°C), making it a perfect indoor plant for most households. While it can tolerate a range of temperatures, it should not be exposed to temperatures below 50°F (10°C). The Mini Jade also enjoys dry air and does not require high humidity levels, making it an ideal choice for homes with low humidity or where humidity is not a concern.
