A beautiful tropical shrub or small tree, the Barbados Cherry (Malpighia punicifolia) is prized in bonsai for its graceful branching, glossy green foliage, and charming pink flowers that give way to bright red, edible cherries. Native to the Caribbean and Central America, this species grows in warm, humid regions and is a favorite among bonsai artists for its ornamental appeal and fruiting potential. Its compact size and rewarding growth habits make it suitable for both beginners and experienced collectors.
☀️ Lighting ☀️
The Barbados Cherry Bonsai prefers bright, filtered light or full morning sun. Outdoors, it does well with partial sun exposure; indoors, place it near a sunny window. To encourage flowering and fruiting, aim for at least 5–6 hours of light per day. Insufficient light may result in leggy growth and reduced blooming.
💧 Watering 💧
This bonsai enjoys consistent moisture but dislikes soggy roots. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil is dry. During hot months or when flowering/fruiting, you may need to water more frequently. Avoid overwatering, and always use a pot with good drainage. In drier indoor climates, misting the foliage can help with humidity.
🌥️Weather☀️
Barbados Cherry is a tropical/subtropical species and should be protected from cold. It thrives in temperatures between 65°F to 90°F (18°C to 32°C). Bring indoors when temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C). Keep away from drafts and sudden temperature changes indoors. If grown outside during warmer months, transition gradually to avoid shock.
