- PLANT CARE
Bring the beauty of a native North American evergreen into your bonsai collection with this Eastern Red Cedar Pre-Bonsai (Juniperus virginiana). Known for its fine evergreen foliage, naturally upright growth, and excellent tolerance to outdoor conditions, Eastern Red Cedar is a rewarding species for bonsai training and long-term development.
As the tree matures, the trunk develops attractive texture and character while the branches can be pruned and wired into a wide variety of bonsai styles. Its naturally compact foliage makes it especially attractive for formal upright, informal upright, windswept, and traditional conifer bonsai designs.
Eastern Red Cedar is an outdoor bonsai and should experience the natural change of seasons. With proper care, it can become an increasingly impressive specimen year after year.
Each tree is planted in a ceramic bonsai pot and carefully selected for healthy growth and future bonsai potential.
☀️ Lighting ☀️
Eastern Red Cedar grows best outdoors in full sun.
Provide approximately 6 or more hours of direct sunlight per day whenever possible. Plenty of sunlight encourages compact foliage, healthy growth, and stronger branching.
Avoid keeping this species permanently indoors. Even a bright indoor window generally does not provide the conditions it needs for long-term health.
💧 Watering 💧
Water thoroughly when the upper layer of soil begins to dry.
When watering, completely saturate the soil until water drains freely from the bottom of the pot.
Do not allow the tree to remain constantly soggy, but avoid allowing the root ball to become completely dry for extended periods.
Because bonsai containers hold less soil than traditional pots, trees may require frequent watering during hot or windy weather.
🌥️Weather☀️
Eastern Red Cedar is a cold-hardy outdoor tree and benefits from experiencing natural seasonal temperature changes.
During winter, growth slows and the tree enters a natural dormancy period.
The foliage may sometimes develop bronze, purple, or slightly brown tones during colder weather. This seasonal coloration can be completely normal and typically returns to greener tones as temperatures warm.
Container-grown bonsai roots are more exposed to extreme cold than trees growing in the ground, so additional root protection may be necessary during severe freezing conditions.
