- DESCRIPTION
- PLANT CARE
The Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii) is a classic bonsai species prized for its rugged appearance, strong growth, distinctive dark green needles, and ability to develop impressive bark and trunk character with age.
Native to coastal areas of Japan and East Asia, Japanese Black Pine has been cultivated as bonsai for generations and remains one of the most recognizable species in traditional Japanese bonsai. Its naturally strong growth and flexible young branches make it well suited for wiring, shaping, pruning, and long-term bonsai development.
You will receive one similar plant shown in the photos. Every plant is unique and will vary slightly in trunk shape, branching, height, and overall appearance.
Please note: This is a nursery-grown pre-bonsai and has not been fully styled. Wiring, trunk movement, and branching will vary from plant to plant.
⚠️ Add a heat pack at checkout if temperatures in your area fall below 40°F (4°C)
☀️ Lighting ☀️
Japanese Black Pine is an outdoor bonsai and performs best in full sun.
Provide several hours of direct sunlight each day. Strong sunlight helps encourage compact growth, healthy needles, and strong branching.
This species should not be grown permanently indoors. Indoor display should only be temporary.
💧 Watering 💧
Water thoroughly when the upper layer of the soil begins to dry.
Japanese Black Pine prefers evenly managed moisture but does not like soil that remains constantly saturated. Good drainage and airflow around the roots are especially important.
During hot summer weather, check the soil frequently because bonsai and nursery containers can dry quickly.
🌥️Weather☀️
Japanese Black Pine is a temperate outdoor tree and benefits from experiencing the natural seasonal cycle.
It is considerably more cold tolerant than tropical bonsai species, but trees growing in small containers should still be protected from severe freezes and extreme temperature swings.
Avoid keeping the tree inside a heated home during winter, as it requires its normal seasonal dormancy.
